Here are the highlights:

1. Blu-Ray in the Great Room

We've added a Samsung "connected" Blu-Ray player to the upper level Great Room. The Blu-ray can also play standard DVDs. This replaced a combo DVD / VHS player -- but we figure the days of VHS are long past (although there is still a VHS player in the Rec Room).

We'll be exploring the "connected" features of the new player over the next few months.

2. Upgraded Receiver in the Great Room

The new receiver is an Onkyo Model TX-NR609. The most significant change is that this receiver passes HDMI audio and video -- in other words, true surround sound for TV and Movies. And it sounds great! This also simplifies the setup in that the TV input is now always set on HDMI-1. The receiver also has a digital USB input for your iPod / iPad, which improves sound quality.

3. Improved Remote Control in the Great Room

We're fans of the Harmony Universal Remote controls that are used with all three of the common area A/V systems at Sound Racer. But using the control in the great room required aiming it at a very specifc spot between the TV and the Receiver. To make the experience easier, we added an IR "blaster" network that connects all devices. We moved the "aim point" to the top of the TV, making it much easier to hit from just about anywhere in the room.

4. Larger TV in the Den

Last but definitely not least, we increased the size of the TV in the mid-level Den. The new Samsung 51" 1080p plasma TV has a wonderful picture and we think it is perfectly sized for movie viewing in the den.
_______________

In addition, we replaced the receiver in the downstairs Rec Room which had some audio problems at the end of the 2011 season. And finally, the folks at Custom Audio reccomended that we tilt the Great Room monitor slightly downward to improve viewing angle and reduce glare. A small change, but we think it's a big improvement.

Happpy Holidays from Sound Racer!

We'd like to wish all of our guests a very happy holiday season. We were also fortunate (and thankful) that Currituck Club property owners who were on-site shortly after Irene organized to visit and inspect properties in the Club. We learned that Sound Racer sustained no visible exterior damage, with the only signs of the Hurricane being some debris in the yard and some "interesting things" in the pool. Below are some photos taken on Tuesday, August 29.

Welcome, 2011 Guests!

It's the beginning of the 2011 rental season and we would like to extend a warm welcome to all of our guests and especially those of you that have visited Sound Racer in prior years. We thank all of you for choosing Sound Racer, and we hope you have a wonderful vaction in the Outer Banks.

During the off-season we have been busy getting everything ready, and we have made some additions / enhancements for 2011. First, we should note that privileges at the Pine Island Beach Club will be available to all Sound Racer guests again in 2011. As long-time beach goers, we think the Pine Island Club offers a great way to access the beach very conveniently: with ample parking and a large pool just steps from the shore. And that's just the beginning. See last year's post for more details.

Some other new features for 2011 include:

1. In the Den, we've replaced the A/V cabinet with one that has more convenient DVD storage, as well as a bit more room for the components.

2. In the Bunk Bedroom, we've added a small book case along with several dozen children's books.

3. In the Office Nook, we've added a credenza for storage and a detailed wall map of the Outer Banks. We've also upgraded the wireless router to improve internet coverage throughout the house (and poolside).

4. We've ordered some additional Adirondack chairs for the mid-level deck as a compliment to the pair we added last year. We expect them to arrive sometime in May. Yet another new color...

Finally, we've refeshed several kitchen items and added a few new decorative items as well. We hope you enjoy your stay, and please contact us with your feedback, questions and suggestions.

Video: The Pine Island Beach Club

Access to the Pine Island Beach Club will be provided at no extra cost to all Sound Racer guests in 2011. We did make a few small adjustments to our early and late weeks, increasing the rates by $50. We also adjusted the week before Labor Day to be more representative of other 5BR homes in the Currituck Club. We still think this week is one of the best values throughout the OBX.

As mentioned in our earlier post, Sound Racer will be available from May through September 2011. We've shortened the season slightly to allow us more time to prepare for the new season. We have some upgrades and new features planned and we will post them here when they are complete. (And, the Pine Island Beach Club membership will continue in 2011.)

Thanks to all of our guests in 2010. We are especially pleased to see that several repeat guests have already reserved for 2011. During the years that we were renters on the OBX, we would search for a special house that we could return to year after year; a house that would feel like home when we were at the beach. Our hope in designing Sound Racer was that we could create the same type of "destination home" for other families, and repeat guests are a sign we are on the right track.

As always, we are very interested in your comments and suggestions. Please email us or post a comment here.

More Details on the Pine Island Beach Club

Pine Island Beach Club

In August, we spent a week at the OBX and stayed in Sound Racer. This was the first time that we were able to use the facilities at the Pine Island Beach Club, an ammenity that is available to all guests beginning in July 2010. When we were first presented with the opportunity to add membership as an ammenity for our guests, we said "yes" based on the description of the club, but we had never visited. Now that we've spent some time there, as long time beach goers we're ready to report: We were pretty impressed.

We've posted some pictures on our Flickr site. Here are a few of the features and benefits we enjoyed at the Pine Island Beach Club (PIBC):

1. Plentiful parking. The lot is north of the Hampton Inn and is accessed through the same drive. Veer left for the PIBC lot, which was never full on the days we visited.

2. Quiet beach. Once you enter the PIBC, you can choose to hang out at the pool or head directly to the beach. The beach here, at the south end of the Pine Island homes, is very quiet. You will need to bring your own beach gear, but there is a snack bar and bathrooms at the PIBC.

3. A great pool. The PIBC pool has 26-yard lanes for swimming laps, as well as shallow areas for just hanging out. There is also a kids pool, and plenty of seating on the deck.

4. Other amenities. Also available are ping pong, pool, bathrooms and a snack bar. Staff and lifeguards are on duty, and activities are planned throughout the summer.

All guests will receive Pine Island "credentials" in their Village Realty check-in packets. Enjoy!

Sound Racer: 2011 Availability

Thanks to all of our guests who made 2010 a "sell out summer" at Sound Racer. We've already received some expressions of interest regarding 2011 (thank you!) and so we're posting an update on our plans for 2011.

In 2011, we plan to make Sound Racer available beginning Sunday May 1. The last rental week will begin on Sunday September 28th (concluding October 2). We realize that Village Realty has posted a "default" calendar on our main site that indicates additional weeks will be available. This is standard operating procedure for Village Realty -- actual rental availability is posted towards the end of the summer after owners return their contracts. By posting the actual dates now, we want to provide our potential guests with as much information as possible.

Just Added for 2010: Membership in the Pine Island Beach Club

We are very pleased to add a new amenity to Sound Racer for 2010: membership privileges to the Pine Island Beach Club. We were told this was a first-come first-served opportunity offered to a limited number of Currituck Club homeowners, and after reviewing the descriptive material and talking with Village Realty and the Pine Island management we thought it would be a great addition.

The Beach Club is located just north of the Hampton Inn along Route 12. See aerial map below; the Club parking lot is to the north, the Pine Island Diner lot is to the south. The Club offers access to the relatively uncrowded Pine Island beaches, and a lot more. The facility includes:

Oceanfront pool

Children’s pool

Supervised children’s activities

Picnic tables and umbrellas

Direct access to private beach

Large dune deck

Free parking

Bike rack

Showers and restroom facilities

We thought this would add an excellent option for enjoying the beach. While the Currituck Club trolley is very convenient -- it picks up right in front of Sound Racer -- and we enjoy the Currituck Club's beach access area, the Pine Island facility offers a large pool as well as convenient parking. As a family, we know that there are times when having a car nearby is very helpful -- whether for supplies or a quick run to Harris Teeter. Having a pool nearby adds options for family members who want a break from the salt water. The Pine Island Diner is next door, and there are restrooms at the Club.

Credentials for the Club will be included in each guest's check-in packet beginning June 13. We're excited to try out the Pine Island Club when we next visit the beach. If you get a chance and would like to share your experiences, please comment on this post.

Some New Features for 2010

We've added some enhancements for the 2010 rental season. Some of these are based on guest feedback -- we're always interested in ideas and suggestions!

1. In the Kitchen, we've added the an electric griddle, crockpot, casserole dishes and pyrex, various utensils. We also upgraded the coffee makers.

2. Below, a few words about each.

Like many purchasers, our first step was a visit to a model home -- in this case the models in the Currituck Club. There, we met Ed Godley who provided our introduction to real estate ownership in the Outer Banks. Ed was a font of information and helped us understand options related to building, owning and renting. With a good knowledge of the Currituck Club, Ed showed us various lots and assisted us in the purchase of Lot 312.

Ed introduced us to our builder, Renaissance Construction. Owned and operated by Steve and Debbie Daniels, Renaissance has built several homes in the Currituck Club. One of these homes (The Master's Touch) was our favorite rental. The attention to detail and quality in this home left us predisposed towards Renassiance, and our first meeting with Steve sealed the deal.

The process with Renaissance began with a meeting with their designer, Paul Gilbertson. Paul asked us to start with a "wish list" of features based on our previous experience at the OBX. The list included basics like number of bedrooms, type of floor plan and general amenities. But Paul encouraged to go further and think about smaller spaces (nooks), window design, exterior features, etc. All of this was enhanced by Paul's experience with other homes, which included the opportunity for us to look at drawings and floor plans from previous projects. Paul's first set of rough plans was very much on the mark. We made a few changes , and we were set to go to pricing.

As would be expected, the pricing process involved lots of back and forth on materials, specifications and design. One of the benefits of working with Renaissance is their Design Center, located in Manteo. Working with Laura Wolke of the Renaissance staff, we were able to choose finishes, fixtures and other items (even hose bibs!) in one day. Steve, Paul and Linda were very helpful in discussing the cost / benefit of various options.

With pricing set and a contract signed, we secured financing and construction began. Prior to construction, Renaissance completed a very detailed site survey which allowed us to position the house so as to maximize the number of live oaks and other trees we could "save". Construction was well documented on the Renaissance website; we could check in from afar and see the progress on our home.

Once the basic design of the house was complete, it was time to work on the details including furnishings and electronics. We worked with Brian Sherlock of Ambrose Furniture in Coinjock (right on Route 158) for interior furnishings and design. With constant admonitions to "Remember this is a Beach House!", Brian was a great resource for everthing from furniture to accent pieces to colors. Ambrose offers large, well-stocked showrooms and lots of experience with beach homes. They also offer complete decor and accessory packages that get the home "move-in" ready, with everything from pictures on the walls to silverware in the drawers. We planned for a "one-day" delievery and setup and everything was ready and delivered by a friendly staff. And -- the best part -- this part of the process was surprisingly economical.

For electronics, we chose to work with the pros at Custom Audio. As an "A/V guy", I was tempted to do some of the work myself. I'm sure glad that I fought that urge and went with Custom. In a word, the Custom Audio team are pros. They know what works best in beach houses, including special features like outdoor and remote speakers; iPod docks, special mounts and surge protectors. They coordinate with the builder to make sure that pre-wiring is done at the appropriate time. They know how to configure the systems for renters' ease of use, including laminated instructions. We found the cost reasonable, and the service exceptional.

Other recommended vendors who worked with us on Sound Racer:

Game Room: Mark Lupean of East Coast Games. Mark has a lot of experience with rental homes and guided us towards a setup that would be attractive to renters and easy to maintain.

Grills, outdoor furniture, and great advice: Kellog Supply Company in Duck. Kellog is truly a local hardware store with excellent knowledge and helpful staff. We have returned to Kellog many times for items large and small. Joe Gaca and Pat Scarlett have been very helpful with advice. The furniture on the screened porch is from Kellog.

Cabinetry: We can't say enough good about the quality and service we received from Cliff Granitski of Island Woodcrafts. We were introduced to Cliff through Renaissance and he is responsible for the cabinetry throughout the house, including the often-complimented kitchen. Like all cabinets, ours occasionally needed adjustment and Cliff made sure we were satisfied customers.

Rental Management: As described elsewhere in this blog, we chose Village Realty based on our prior experience as renters. We have to say, as owners Village Realty exceeded our expectations. As we were beginning the construction process, Village prepared an estimate of rental income (which turned out to be slightly conservative). They helped us create our marketing presence on their site and ours. And all along they way they offered helpful advice and answer our "new owner" questions.

Other vendors that deserve a "shout out" include Coastal Gas, Oceanside Pool and Spa, and Aqua Turf Landscaping.

Without minimizing the amount of time and effort that goes in to building a new home, we can honestly say that in the end our experience was truly enjoyable. And the credit goes to the firms and people listed above.

Sound Racer now on YouTube!

We have begun to post short videos on YouTube! Detailed directions are also included in the Renter's Guide and there are laminated instructions in the Great Room, Mid-level Den, and Game Room. If you experience a problem please call Village Realty. We have also posted some advanced troubleshooting tips in a separate post.

This post was updated in January 2012 to incoporate the new upgraded components.

Great Room, Den and Rec Room

1. These three systems use a Harmony Universal remote that has been customized for each system. Labels on the back of the remote identify the A/V system each remote "belongs to".

2. The Harmony Remote control is used to choose a function (e.g. "Watch TV") and controls all components including the TV, Receiver, DVD, etc. Note that in the top level Great Room, the Harmony Romete should be pointed at the top of the TV where we've installed an "IR Blaster". In general the Harmony Remote must be used at a distance where it can "see" all components. This is especially important in the lower level Rec Room, where the TV and Receiver are a few feet apart. In this room, the remote works best from a distance of around ten feet.

3. Functions that can be accessed directly from the Harmony Remote include "Watch TV", "Watch Movie", and "Listen to Music" for CDs. The "More Activities" button is used to access "Listen to Digital Music" (the iPod dock on the ground and top levels); "Listen to FM Radio"; and "Play A Game" (using the game inputs in the Den).

4. In case of a problem, the "Help" Button is very, um, helpful. It will walk you through a series of diagnostics to make sure each components is in the correct mode. When using Help, make sure that the Harmony remote is at a distance where it can "see" all components.

5. If the "Help" button doesn't fix the problem, turn off all the components with the Harmony Remote and then start again. Tip: Always use the Harmony Remote to turn components off and on.

Bedroom TV / DVD

1. Each Bedroom has a DirecTV box and a combo TV/DVD on the wall. To watch TV, use the DirecTV remote control. The slider at the top of the remote should be all the way to the left under the "D".

2. To turn on (or off) the TV use the "D&TV" On/Off buttons located on the top right of the DirecTV remote control.

3. Channels can then be switched with the channel button or the keypad on the DirecTV remote.

4. Troubleshooting tip: If you receive "snow" and the TV displays "Cable Analog", use the "TV input" button (top left of the remote) to change the input to "Video". Simply press the input button until "Video" is selected.

5. To watch a DVD, slide the DVD (label facing out) into the slot on the left side of the TV. The Toshiba remote can then be used to access DVD functions such as play, pause, etc. After finishing the movie, we've found that "powering off" (and then "on") both the TV and the DirecTV box is the best way to return to TV viewing.

Advanced A/V Troubleshooting TIps

On occasion one of Sound Racer's A/V systems may require more advanced troubleshooting. This may occur after a power outage, or if connections or setting on a major component have been changed. Here are some "real world" procedures based on our experience during Sound Racer's first two years. These are intended as a resource for us (the owners), Village Realty, and tech-oriented guests. We update these regularly based on situations that have arisen. (Last Update: January 2012)

A. Check Basic Settings

If one of the main systems in the Great Room, Den or Rec Room is not behaving as expected, a good first step is to confirm all of the component settings are correct. If the Harmony remote is suspected to be "out of sync", many of these settings can be adjusted manually i.e., without using the Harmony remote control. This information is also helpful if the Harmony remote is temporarily lost. (Hint: check under the cushions.)

Great Room Settings

1. Watch TV: Samsung TV Input* [HDMI1]; DirecTV Box [ON]; Onkyo Receiver [CBL/SAT]; Speakers [A]

2. Watch Movie: Samsung TV Input* [HDMI1]; DirecTV Box [OFF]; Samsung Blu-ray Player [ON] Receiver Source [BD/DVD]; Speakers [A]

3. Digital Music (ipod): Receiver Source [USB]; Speakers [A]

*Note that in the Great Room, the TV Input can be changed via a touch-sensitive "TV Source" button on the lower right front panel.

Den Settings

1. Watch TV: Samsung TV Input [HDMI1]; DirecTV Box [ON]; Denon Receiver Source [TV/CBL (which is DirecTV)]; Speakers [A]

2. Watch Movie: Samsung TV Input [HDMI1]; DirecTV Box [OFF]; Receiver Source [DVD/HDP]; Speakers [A]

B. Problem: No DirecTV service or not all channels received

A power outage or interruption can cause a DirecTV box to need a "reset". Sometimes the box comes back with only a limited selection of channel choices. We've followed these steps to reinstate service:

1. Check Settings: In a bedroom, insure that the DirecTV box is on (blue light on front), the TV is on (green light on front) and that the TV input is set to "Video". TV input can be changed using the DirecTV remote.

2. Insure that the Panamax A/V power strip in the second floor den is plugged in and turned on. It is located in the TV stand. It plugs into the wall, and also has an "On / Off" switch on the front left panel. The main DirecTV amplifier is plugged into the power strip, and must have power for the system to operate. Sometimes this alone will correct problems with DirecTV. However, if the strip was plugged in to begin with, or not all channels are appearing after plugging it in, proceed to step 3.

3. Reset the DirecTV boxes, one at a time. First, make sure the A/V system where you will reset the box is set to "Watch TV". Use the Harmony remote in the Great Room, Den, and Rec Room. In the bedrooms, insure the DirecTV box and the TV is on, and that the TV input is set to "Video". The input can be changed using the "Input" button on the left side of the Toshiba TVs.

Next, open the small door on the lower right front of the DirecTV box and press the small red "Reset" button for a few seconds. The DirecTV picture will go black, followed by a welcome screen and a screen with a "progress bar" that says "Acquiring information from satellites..." Once this process completes, the DirecTV service should be restored.

C. Problem: No sound from remote speakers on the top floor.

If there is no sound coming from the Russurround remote speakers, there are two possible problems. Investigate in this order:

1. Is the power "on" for the remote speakers? Even when "off", each control panel should have a small green LED "lit"; this indicates power is present at the control. If not lit, this indicates the power source has been disconnected from the Russuround hub located behind the Onkyo amplifier on the bottom A/V shelf in the Great Room. The power source is a "brick" -- a transformer similar to those used from computers. One end plugs into the main power strip (the AC end); the DC end plugs into the circular receptacle on the lower left of the Russurround hub. (The hub resembles a two-gang electrical switch with power and audio connections on the front and speaker cables on the back.) Once the power is restored, the Green LEDs on the wall controls will light up.

2. [Check Audio Connection into Russurround Hub.]

D. Problem: No sound or picture when trying to use DirecTV or watch a movie in the Great Room. If all components (TV, Receiver plus DirecTV Box or Blu-Ray player "on", this can be a sign that the HDMI cable has become loose at the back of the receiver. This can happen when the components have been moved -- sometimes the cleaners will do this. Village Realty can be called to check and reconnect the cable.

A Beach House That Tweets?

Yes, Sound Racer "caught the bug" and is now on Twitter. We've rented homes in Ocean Hill, Whalehead and the Currituck Club. As you might have guessed from our choices, we've always enjoyed the quiet of the northern Outer Banks.

A few years ago we "got the bug" and decided to investigate Outer Banks real estate. In the end, we decided to build and chose a soundfront lot. We had always enjoyed the "contrast" offered by the sound: the lovely sunsets, the live oak trees and stunning sound views. The Currituck Club was an easy choice given the fine upkeep and amenities offered.

From the Currituck Club, the beach is a short trolley ride away -- and young children seem to love the trip to the beach almost as much as the beach itself. Golf, tennis and community pools round out the package. With its sidewalks and manicured grounds, the Currituck Club has a "neighborhood feel" that is tough to match. Add to that nearby shopping -- including Corolla's new Harris Teeter -- and the deal was sealed.

In designing 'Sound Racer', our aim was to incorporate as many elements as possible from our favorite rentals. We wanted a house that took advantage of the wonderful views from as many rooms as possible. Inside, we wanted comfortable places for families to gather -- whether for meals, watching a movie, playing a game or just hanging out. At the same time we felt it was important to offer places that allowed solitude and quiet. A well-appointed pool area was a must. As our children grew, we found that afternoons spent poolside became as popular as a trek to the beach.

Here are a few of things we included based on our experience:

For the view: a "reverse floor plan" with main living areas on the upper level, including a large deck with a grill, a table for eight, and chairs for watching the sun set with an adult beverage in hand.

For the pool area: A hot tub, a tiki bar with a grill, and plenty of deck room around the pool for sunning.

For quiet areas: "private" decks on the front of the house.

Games: pool, foosball and ping pong.

Media: Three high-quality A/V systems including outdoor speakers on the top deck and at the pool, as well as a TV and DVD player in every bedroom.

If "work" intervenes: an office nook with desk and printer. And a pretty good view.

Comfort and convenience: Purified drinking water to eliminate schleping from the grocery store. An outdoor shower. Easy-to-use grills with direct gas connections. Etc....

We also decided to offer rentals that begin on Sunday. Our experience is that the beach traffic is somewhat better on Sunday, and in our experience it seemed that there were fewer Sunday rentals available among similar homes. For a rental company, we chose Village Realty based on our personal experience with the company. (We rented three years in the Currituck Club prior to building.)

In the end, we wanted to build a home that would be part of great memories for our guests, just as the Outer Banks has given us many memorable summers.

Sound Racer - Welcome!

Sound Racer is a new 5BR soundfront home being built in the Currituck Club on North Carolina's Outer Banks.
